IMT hold bi-monthly meeting

The IMT held its bi-monthly meeting on the 24th of November 2021 in Harare.

Chaired by the Attorney General of Zimbabwe (AG), Advocate P. Machaya, IMT bi-monthly meetings are designed to assess the status of the Constitutional Legislative Alignment process, with each line ministry giving updates on progress made as well as challenges encountered.

Present at the meeting were Legal Officers from several line ministries and representatives from several Civil Society Organizations (CSO) that included the Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN) and Veritas. The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission was also represented.

During the presentation, the AG revealed that IMT’s developmental partner, the EU will continue to support the IMT, and the support is expected to last to early next year.

IMT’s work was partly hindered by the deadly Covid 19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns which followed.

The IMT has done a splendid job as they have aligned most of the Acts that needed attention. Out of the 183 Acts of Parliament that needed alignment with the Constitution, only 29 are left.

The IMT Bill tracker, an instrument that the IMT uses to reflect the status of alignment of laws with the Constitution was used as the basis by line ministries in giving updates on laws that fall under each line ministry’s purview. Legal advisors from government line ministries gave their status reports.

The IMT continues to support line ministries to expedite and conclude the alignment of laws with the Constitution. The European Union to Zimbabwe and the Centre for Applied Legal Research are IMT’s developmental partners.
